H702 Elementary, My Dear Watson
Marion Carlson
Drawing is the foundation of art. This skill requires no exceptional ability, only vision and a bit of coordination. Putting marks on paper that you cannot put into words is the essence of a drawing. Each week students will be introduced to a series of exercises which will give them the tools to create a successful drawing and explore that essence. The elements of design will be introduced through a series of exercises to show the function and creative application of line, value, texture etc. The aim is to gather all the information and put it in an orderly fashion to complete and articulate a drawing. Materials list will be handed out at the first session.

H723 Learning from the Masters
Marion Carlson
In this two-hour class, different painting techniques by famous artists will inform us about styles and art movements. The emphasis will be on how the painting was structured: its color, texture and form. The painting for each class will be analyzed for elements of design which are the core of any painting. This course is two-fold: learning how to use acrylic paint along with expanding one’s understanding of the styles and methods used by artists to express a diversity of ideas. The aim is to realize an original image using methods acquired by the execution of each painting from the master as well as developing one’s visual thinking skills.
